2010 Funding Opportunities
The Komen Memphis MidSouth Affiliate is proud to announce the availability of grant funds for the 2010 year. Grants will be made to support efforts to reduce breast cancer disparities in Shelby, Fayette, Tipton, Desoto and Tunica counties.
Based on a community needs assessment, Komen has identified the three following funding priority areas:
- Projects focusing on breast health education among African American, Hispanic and rural women in our 5 county service area.
- Projects focusing on breast screening services among African American, Hispanic and rural women in our 5 county service area.
- Projects focusing on providing culturally-appropriate support services to African American, Hispanic, rural and low income breast cancer survivors.
The deadline for applications is February 19, 2010 by 5:00 pm CST.

Wings Cancer Foundation, Awarded $15,000
The Wings Cancer Foundation will sponsor a wellness retreat for breast cancer survivors to nurture, enhance, and aid in their emotional, spiritual and physical recovery.
Baptist Memorial Hospital – Tipton, Awarded $30,000
Baptist – Tipton will provide 300 free mammograms to uninsured or low income patients. This will be new to the hospital to be able to provide free mammograms. The hospital will also provide educational information to the community on early detection and prevention through two classes in October.
Desoto Health & Wellness Center, Awarded $30,000
The Desoto Health & Wellness Center will provide education, breast cancer screening and demonstrations on self-examination to the working uninsured women of Desoto County. The target population will receive screenings for the estimated 150 women at no cost.
Children and Family Services, Awarded $30,000
The Komen Breast Health Project will provide seminars for 30 survivors or individuals with a family history of breast cancer via monthly seminars and educate 2,500 women on breast health by providing semi-monthly outreach contacts through community awareness presentations at local venues, civic, social, education or faith based organizations.
Memphis Cancer Foundation, Awarded $35,000
The project will provide (1) BSE education sessions, (2) breast health resource guides, (3) support vouchers for financially eligible breast cancer patients, (4) group information support meetings and/or educational materials, (5) mammography screenings for uninsured, health and physically challenged women and (6) survey participation for breast cancer survivors.
Urban Health Education and Support Services, Awarded $40,000
A Carin' Touch provides culturally competent services to newly diagnosed breast cancer patients, survivors, and/or relapsed women who are primarily African American and/or from economically disadvantaged backgrounds. There are 5 components to the program: (1) a support group, (2) community outreach, (3) Going the Extra Mile program, (4) services to newly diagnosed patients and (5) limited financial assistance to women in treatment.
Tipton County Commission on Aging, Awarded $40,490
The Tipton County Commission on Aging will continue to advance the cause of breast cancer wellness using the Komen LEAP (Locate, Educate, Activate, and Participate) model. Project will be deemed successful when a minimum of 125 uninsured or underinsured have received breast health and wellness education and/or screening mammograms or have attended a wellness support group meeting.
Julie B. Baier Foundation, Awarded $87, 918
The Julie B. Baier Foundation dba The Mroz Baier Breast Care Clinic will to continue to serve the diagnostic needs of uninsured patients with a screened breast problem. Services that may be performed include diagnostic mammography and its interpretation, cyst aspiration, image guided biopsy to include stereotactic biopsy.
West Tennessee Area Health Education Center, Awarded $96,181
Project: WE CARE is designed to educate and empower economically disadvantaged women and youth in Fayette and Shelby counties to adopt good health practices. Project: WE CARE will provide education to 500 women; mammogram screenings, follow-up and referral/support for 100 women ages 35-69 and education and support/referrals to 250 youth ages 14-18.
Church Health Center, Awarded $100,368
The CHC's goal is a comprehensive approach to fighting breast cancer among the working uninsured, homeless, elderly and underserved in our community. Through the CHC clinic ministry, they provide medical services including screening mammograms, diagnostic mammograms, ultrasounds, core biopsies and other treatment as needed. CHC expects to serve approx. 2,500 – 3,000 women in our community.
Baptist Memorial Hospital for Women, Awarded $245,043
The Filling the Gap – Mammography for Underserved Women program will help Susan G. Komen for the Cure meet its goal of providing breast cancer screenings and diagnostic services for 350 medically underserved women in Shelby, Fayette, Tipton, Desoto and Tunica counties, with a focus on African American, Hispanic and rural women in the five county area. CAD technology will be used for all mammograms. Additional tests include diagnostic mammograms, ultrasounds, breast MRIs and core biopsies.
