2010 Community Grants
The following community grants, totaling $851,358 were awarded by the Memphis-MidSouth Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure. These organizations support Shelby, Desoto, Tunica, Tipton and Fayette counties, providing breast cancer education, screening, and treatment programs.
Baptist Memorial Hospital-DeSoto, Awarded $63,890
Baptist DeSoto Caring for Women – Baptist DeSoto Caring for Women will provide 100 digital screening mammograms and diagnostic services for underserved women in DeSoto and Tunica Counties in Mississippi. It will encourage baseline mammography for women who are between the ages of 35 and 40 and annual mammograms for women ages 40 and above. Also targeted will be women who have been diagnosed with breast cancer and do not have insurance coverage or inadequate coverage for follow-up screening and diagnostic tests.
Baptist Memorial Hospital for Women, Awarded $246,420
Filling the Gap – Mammography for Underserved Women – The Filling the Gap – Mammography for Underserved Women program will help Susan G. Komen for the Cure meet its goal of providing breast cancer screenings and diagnostic services for 400 medically underserved women in Shelby, Fayette, Tipton, Desoto and Tunica counties, with a focus on African American, Hispanic and rural women in the five county area. CAD technology will be used for all mammograms. Additional tests include diagnostic mammograms, ultrasounds, breast MRIs and core biopsies.
Christ Community Health Center, Awarded $72,125
Care Stream – CCHS is a provider of quality primary health care services to the medically underserved community in southwest Memphis, Binghamton, Frayser, Hickory Hill, and Orange Mound. Through its Care Stream Women's Outreach Program, CCHS seeks to provide routine screening and specialty screenings to 300 uninsured women and education services to over 2,500 women in an effort to increase access to needed mammography screenings and other diagnostic screening tests.
Church Health Center, Awarded $112,435
Comprehensive Breast Care – The CHC's goal is a comprehensive approach to fighting breast cancer among the working uninsured, homeless, elderly and underserved in our community. Through the CHC clinic ministry, they provide medical services including screening mammograms, diagnostic mammograms, ultrasounds, core biopsies and other treatment as needed. Through the CHC wellness ministry, Hope & Healing, and their Faith Communities Ministries, they provide awareness events and educational outreach. CHC expects to serve approx. 2,500 – 3,000 women in our community. They estimate approximately 1,000 through the clinic and 2,000 through Hope and Healing and congregations.
Julie B. Baier Foundation, Awarded $130,000
Julie B. Baier Foundation's Diagnostic Treatment – The Julie B. Baier Foundation dba The Mroz Baier Breast Care Clinic will to continue to serve the diagnostic needs of 400 uninsured patients that are in need of breast care services. These services include mammograms, ultrasound, physical exams and treatment to include biopsy. Patients will come from our surrounding 5 county area. The clinic accepts referrals from the Christ Community Health Center and Church Health Center.
Memphis Cancer Foundation, Awarded $35,000
STAAR Witness – STAAR Witness Project is an outreach activity of the STAARS group. The project will provide (1) BSE education sessions, (2) breast health resource guides, (3) support vouchers for financially eligible breast cancer patients, (4) group information support meetings and/or educational materials, (5) mammography screenings for uninsured, health and physically challenged women and (6) survey participation for breast cancer survivors. The project's goal is to reach approx. 3,500 women with 500 reached through formal sessions and 3000 through informal sessions.
The Regional Medical Center at Memphis, Awarded $40,000
Take Care/Be Aware, Free Mammogram Screenings – Take Care Be Aware is a collaborative program between The Regional Medical Center and Memphis (The MED), Sacred Heart Catholic Church and Mississippi Boulevard Church. The program will offer free mammograms and early detection education to 200 uninsured Black and Hispanic women who live, work or worship within walking distance of the MED as well as offer 100 uninsured female employees of the MED free mammograms and education.
Urban Health Education and Support Services, Awarded $46,000
A Carin' Touch – A Carin' Touch provides culturally competent services to newly diagnosed breast cancer patients, survivors, and/or relapsed women who are primarily African American and/or from economically disadvantaged backgrounds. There are 5 components to the program: (1) a support group, (2) community outreach, (3) Going the Extra Mile program, (4) services to newly diagnosed patients and (5) limited financial assistance to women in treatment. In 2007, the organization expanded activities to include Fayette County. Over 150 women will be directly served through the program. Over 2100 will be reached though presentations, health fairs, etc.
West Tennessee Area Health Education Center, Awarded $85,946
Project: WE CARE – Project: WE CARE is designed to educate and empower economically disadvantaged women and youth in Fayette and Shelby counties to adopt good health practices. The project goals are to increase knowledge regarding breast cancer and to increase screenings and early detection. Project: We Care will provide education to 500 women; mammogram screenings, follow-up and referral/support for 100 women ages 35-69 and education and support/referrals to 250 youth ages 14-18.
Wings Cancer Foundation, Awarded $19,542
Back on Track – Wellness Programs for Breast Cancer Survivors – The Wings Cancer Foundation will sponsor two wellness retreats for women of all ages and stages of breast cancer. These retreats will feature a unique mixture of therapies and education which will give the participants skills to reduce stress and anxiety, find peace and renewal, learn self expression through creative arts and increase their general feeling of well being. These retreats are designed and facilitated by a professional staff with backgrounds and experience in addressing the special concerns of women with breast cancer. The result is a retreat experience that leaves women feeling physically rested and spiritually connected to a community of survivors.
