About Komen
Our mission is to eradicate breast cancer as a life-threatening disease by advancing research, education, screening and treatment.
For more than 20 years, the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation has led our nation's charge in the fight against breast cancer. Nancy Goodman Brinker founded the Komen Foundation in 1982 to honor a promise she made to her older sister Susan Goodman Komen. Suzy was just 36 years old when she died of breast cancer. At that time, breast cancer was rarely discussed in public and little was known about the disease.
Nancy vowed to do everything in her power to fund a cure. Today she is joined by scores of women and men, families, researchers, corporate and community partners, volunteers and donors.
The Memphis-MidSouth Affiliate of the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation raises funds to support a variety of programs in Shelby, Fayette, Tipton and DeSoto counties. In 2006, the Memphis-MidSouth Affiliate contributed over $390,000 to provide services including free mammograms, clinical breast exams and breast self-exam instruction to women in this community.
Today, there are more than two million breast cancer survivors alive in the United States. That's because breast cancer is being found earlier due to increased awareness and greater use of screening tests and well as better treatment options. This means a better chance of surviving and a better quality of life than ever before.
The Memphis-MidSouth Affiliate and the local Board of Directors remain committed to our mission. Until a cure is found, we will continue to work and make a difference in the lives of people affected by breast cancer in Shelby, Fayette, Tipton and DeSoto Counties and we still need your help.
